Across the Universe by Beth Revis

We have all faced the questions, “What will I do when I grow up?” and “Where will I live when I grow up?”  How would you answer the question of “live now or 300 years from now?”  This is the question faced by Amy.  Her parents are being frozen to be placed on a space ship that will zoom through space to a new planet.  Her parents, along with 97 others will be awakened upon landing and their expertise regarding engineering, chemistry, weaponry, food production, genetics, etc.  (you get the picture all sciences were represented) will be put into use.

Now fast forward, you are awaken and the first face you see is not the one you were expecting.   He is cute, but who is he? Where are your mom and dad?

This ship that is now your new home is submerged with secrets, murder, deceit just to name a few of the challenges that Amy faces as she is also trying to get acclimated to her new environment.  Her views of love, faith, truth and trust and all tested. How you ask, well I shall not give that away.

I will say that one small task she encounters is explaining the sun, stars, fear, love, differences in skin and individual thought to people that have never been exposed to them.  Which would be worse for you, the never knowing, or the never knowing again?

Beth Revis does an excellent job weaving this tale and also sparking my realization as to my very limited ability to explain the above and more ideas that she presents.

Favorite Quote: “I am giving you an option…you can just walk away….we’ll be okay.”

This example of Amy’s father loving her enough to give her the option of not being with them without loading her with guilt while allowing Amy to choose her own path is an admirable trait that I believe would help all of us if we could truly love others this unselfishly.
